Many people, either consciously or subconsciously, fall into one of two common pelvic traps during a plank: an excessive anterior pelvic tilt (arching your lower back, leading to a "swayback" plank) or an excessive posterior pelvic tilt (rounding your lower back, often accompanied by a piking of the hips). Neither is ideal for maximal core engagement and spinal protection. Our goal, my friends, is to find that sweet spot: a neutral spine.
A neutral spine isn't flat, nor is it extremely arched. It's the natural, gentle curvature of your spine, particularly in the lumbar region. Think of it as a subtle "S" shape. In a plank, achieving this means your lower back should have a very slight, natural curve, not a pronounced arch or a completely flattened-out appearance. The "paradox" lies in the common misconception that you need to actively "flatten" your back against the pull of gravity. While the intention to prevent sagging is good, overdoing it can lead to a posterior pelvic tilt, where you tuck your tailbone too aggressively, rounding your lower back and potentially disengaging your glutes and placing strain on your rectus abdominis in an inefficient way.
